Template Layer is the term used to designate a non-printing guide layer. In Illustrator’s Layers Panel, marking a layer as a Template makes its content appear dimmed and non-printing, which is perfect for reference or tracing without affecting your final output. You can still edit or add elements on top of it and lock the layer as needed, then turn off the Template status when you’re ready to print. A Sublayer is just a subdivision within a layer, a regular Layer prints by default, and Selected Object refers to artwork you’ve chosen rather than a layer type, so they don’t indicate a non-printing guide layer.
